Ayurveda is a "Science" as well as an "Art", which deals with life & living.
According to Ayurveda, nature of a living being is of three types which is known as "TRIDOSHAS". They are Vata, Pitta & Kapha.
Rogastu doshavaishamyam, doshasamyam arogataha ||
This is defined like this,
Ayurvedic physician judges the prakruti of the patient and brings in equilibrium or harmony of these doshas thus maintains the health of patient. Impairment in these doshas leads to sickness.
Sama dosha samagnishcha, sama dhatu mala kriyaha, prasanna atma indriya manah SWASTHA ityabidhiyate ||
This is defined like this,
All the Dosha, Agni & Dhathus should function in a balanced state. At the same time Indriya, Atma & Manas should be in "PRASANNAVASTHA". This is knows as a HAPPY MOOD.
Such a person can only be called as "SWASTHA", COMPLETE HEALTH.
Thus ayurveda considers both physical as well as mental fitness together.

The manifestation of the disease is explained through "Kriyakala". It is of six types:
In the above two steps disease many disappear automoticaly without any treatment when the root cause is cut off.
Then diseases spreads to other organs leading to many complaints. In this stage most of the diseases become incurable & many a time the patient succumbs to death.
